#the thing that always makes me cry here is that he actually considers himself the son of odin #he’s still loyal to his father and he’s proud to be odin’s son even if he’s not biologically his son #so after being betrayed for all his life he still loves odin #and odin takes it all for granted

I don’t think he’s entirely “proud” to be his son, he’s trying to validate that he is a worthy son of Odin after being left with no answers due to Odin’s sleep. (proud in the sense that fuck yes I belong to Asgard! Patriotism! Odin is the best dad ever!)

The thing is the entire time he’d been trying to prove himself as Odin’s son. He kills Laufey, his biological father, just to do this. He’s disgusted by Laufey. He’s disgusted by his Jotun identity. The whole act of killing his father Laufey and the frost giants is to erase that part of himself completely. To purify himself of his true identity so that he may be considered a worthy son of Odin. An equal to Thor. A true Asgardian. (because other than that what is he? - he’s a Jotun. All the stories he heard growing up about them is how disgusting and evil they are. Asgard’s enemy. Nothing else. He’s ashamed to be one. If he’s Jotun then he’s also an enemy of Odin, an enemy of Thor, an enemy of Asgard, a freak…a monster.)

Odin never wanted that though - for Loki to destroy the frost giants. He took Loki thinking that somehow there could be peace between Asgardians and Jotuns…his plans fall through due to Thor instigating war and Loki going on a rampage to finish it for Asgard; for his father’s benefit - to prove himself. Odin never wanted Jotunheim destroyed. Odin never wanted Loki to hate himself because he was a Jotun. Odin wanted Loki to understand that he was still his son…but he never told him that. He never gave him that comfort…and at the end of it all he denies Loki and that’s enough for Loki to give up completely - he is no longer of Asgard. He is no longer of Jotunheim. He is himself and he will build his identity as he likes. He is the only one he wants to please and he wants his own piece of the universe to himself…to feel that he belongs somewhere.
